Were You Scared by These Films?

In the spirit (pun intended) of Halloween, I picked out five of the scariest movies I’ve seen.

5. THE EXORCIST
(Screenwriter - William Peter Blatty; Director – William Friedkin, 1973)
I've never touched my quija board ever since.

4. THE OTHERS
(Screenwriter & Director - Alejandro Amenabar, 2001 )
The last time I got scared. Really scared.

3. ROSEMARY’S BABY
(Screenwriter & Director – Roman Polanski, 1968)
Edge-of-your-seat suspense. Shocking ending.

2. THE UNINVITED
(Screenwriter- Dodie Smith & Frank Partos; Director Lewis Allen, 1944)
Haunting theme music (Stella by Starlight). I felt the chills running down my spine.

1. INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS
(Screenwriter - Daniel Mainwaring; Director – Don Siegel, 1956)
Highly suspenseful. And frightening. Really frightening!

Great list, Toto, although i've never seen #2, there. I must investigate. And Rosemary's Baby just never did it for me. Who knows why? I admire no end the sense of doom hanging all o'er the damn thing, but it left me kinda cold. and not in the proper way.

Thanks, Duke. In that case, I'll have to watch Roman Polanski's breakthrough film again. I've seen it a long time ago. I'll let you know about the result of my investigation.

Ive only seen #s 5 and 4. #4 had a great twist in the end and I loved it for that (lets just say that im not so easily frightened).

I saw the remastered release of #5 and to the chagrin of viewers around me, I ended up laughing so loud at certain scenes (i.e. Mother: Theres nothing wrong with her head! Theres something wrong with her bed!).

It was just crazy!

I've stopped looking for scary films; it's gotten tiresome for me. I think I'm trying to look for something else in a horror film.

Which is why I gravitate twoards Kurosawa Kyoshi (Kyua, Kairo), and my favorite horror film's Bride of Frankenstein. They're not scary, scary, I guess, but they offer something more.

Most frightening Filipino horror film I know is probably Celso's Patayin sa Sindak si Barbara. Hokey, and the story's confusing, but it works.

Thanks for your feedback, Noel.
I am not really a fan of horror films. I did the list just for Halloween. I've never really seen much horror films. Invasion of the Body Snatchers is not even a horror film, if you would ask me. But it really frightened me when I saw it more than twenty years ago. I didn't like the latest remake. But I like the earlier remake with Donald Sutherland. I heard that they're going to have a remake of it again.
I think that the most frightening local film which I saw was Dugo Ang Kulay ng Gabi (I'm not sure about the title). It starred Amalia Fuentes and Ronald Remy. I still remember some of the scenes vividly altough I saw it when I was still in grade school.
